17th century paintings… in the street. (Schuttersgalerij) - The Amsterdam Historical Museum has a gallery which is actually part of a public street. The gallery shows fifteen giant 17th century paintings of civic guard groups much like Rembrandt's famous painting 'the Nightwatch’. Many prominent citizens of Amsterdam were member of these city militias ('Schutters Gilden') and paid a lot of money to be in these prestige’s group portraits. These paintings became known as 'Schutters Stukken'. |
