Amsterdam Shopping

Amsterdam ShoppingAmsterdam is an old city and almost the whole centre dates from back to the 17th century, when towns were much smaller. Amsterdam remained until today a small metropolis, and referred to as the ‘smallest of the big cities’. That makes shopping in Amsterdam fun, because you can shop as you walk through the city, seeing the sights as you go. Amsterdam is full of unique small shops, with a choice of products different from any other European city.

Flower MarketFloating Flower Market The Singel Flower Market is one of the most colorful and fragrant places of interest in Amsterdam in all four seasons. It is unique in that the merchandise is displayed on floating barges. This is a relic from the days when the flowers and plants sold at this market were shipped in from the horticultural areas around the city by barges. Fresh flowers are still brought in every day; by vans however, and no longer by boat.

This floating flower market on one of the oldest canals of Amsterdam was first held in 1862. It has since developed into the bestknown flower market of Holland. Whatever your favorite flower, you are bound to find it here. Merchandise ranges from the traditional Dutch Tulips and Geraniums to delicate indoor Cypresses and Manobole plants from the Easter Islands. Typical Dutch souvenirs are sold too. In December the market  colors green with masses of Christmas trees in all shapes and sizes. The market is open Mondays through Fridays from 9am till 6pm and Saturdays from 9am till 5pm.

Location: Singel between the Koningsplein and the Munt.

How to get there:
Floating Flower market is located in the center of Amsterdam on the Singel canal. From Central station you can stroll through shopping street Kalverstraat till the end, or take tram #1, 2 or 5. Check the city map for location.

Haarlemmerstraat - Probably the youngest of the trendy shopping streets in town, Haarlemmerstaraat is less expensive with a big variety of shops, many of them trying to propose new consumer products and the new shopping formula. Starting near Centraal Station, this street offers many one-of-a-kind stores and trendy coffeeshops, brasseries and restaurants.

The fall 2008 issue of the New York Times comments on the Haarlemmerstraat:
“Drop into the design and fashion boutiques in the canal belt, focusing on the areas around Haarlemmerstraat and Rozengracht.”
